How to Care for Your Leather Bag

A good leather bag gets better with use, as long as it gets a little care. These simple steps will keep your Velavio bag clean, supple and in shape for years.

1. Cleaning

Leather

  • Dust regularly: wipe the bag with a soft, dry cloth to stop dirt from building up and scuffing the surface.
  • Clean gently: for marks, use a damp (not wet) cloth with a little mild soap or leather cleaner and wipe in small circles. Never soak the leather.
  • Condition: leather dries out over time. Apply a leather conditioner every 2–3 months to keep it soft. Always test on a small, hidden area first.

Suede

  • Don’t use liquid cleaners on suede. Brush it gently with a soft suede brush, in one direction.
  • For marks, use a suede eraser or take the bag to a specialist cleaner.

Avoid harsh chemicals: household cleaners can dry, crack or discolour leather and suede.

2. Storing

  • Cool and dry: keep your bag away from radiators, damp rooms and direct sunlight, which can dry out or fade the leather.
  • Use a dust bag: it protects against dust and scratches and lets the leather breathe.
  • Keep the shape: stuff the bag lightly with tissue paper and store it upright. Don’t overfill it, as this can stretch the leather.
  • Away from sharp objects: store it where it won’t rub against rough or sharp surfaces.

3. Everyday protection

  • Rain: leather copes with light showers, but dry it with a soft cloth if it gets wet and let it air-dry away from heat. A water-repellent spray made for leather or suede adds protection; test it on a hidden area first.
  • Oils and lotions: hand cream, make-up and oils can mark leather. If they get on the bag, blot them straight away with a dry cloth.
  • Creases: avoid folding or crushing the bag. Conditioner gently worked into a crease helps it relax over time.

4. Stains and marks

  • Act quickly: blot (don’t rub) a fresh stain with a soft cloth. If it stays, use a leather stain remover, tested on a hidden area first.
  • Suede stains: these are tricky to treat at home; a specialist cleaner is the safest option.

5. Hardware

Wipe zips, buckles and clasps with a soft cloth to remove dirt and oils so they keep working smoothly.
